The Reign of "No Mercy": Petr Yan Reclaims the Bantamweight Throne

Petr "No Mercy" Yan has once again solidified his status as one of the most dominant forces in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight division. In a thrilling main event at UFC 323 on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the Russian striking master silenced his critics and avenged a prior loss, securing a unanimous decision victory over his fierce rival, Merab Dvalishvili, to become the two-time undisputed UFC Bantamweight Champion.

The Style: Precision, Power, and Prowess

Yan's fighting style is a masterclass in calculated pressure and exceptional technique. While he holds the rank of Master of Sport in Boxing and primarily fights out of a southpaw stance, reducing him to just a "boxer" ignores his complete skill set:

  • Elite Striking: Yan possesses some of the best technical boxing in the UFC, known for his ability to read his opponent, download their movements in the early rounds, and then unleash punishing, multi-punch combinations. His uppercut and body shots are particularly devastating.

  • Underrated Grappling: Despite his striking accolades, Yan is also a highly accomplished grappler, holding the rank of Master of Sport in MMA (which includes Combat Sambo) and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His takedown defense is historically high (85% career defense rate), and he seamlessly integrates trips and sweeps into his offensive wrestling, making him incredibly difficult to take down and control.

Yan's ability to seamlessly switch his attack from striking to grappling is why he is so dangerous, giving opponents no clear weakness to target.

The Comeback Trail

The victory over Dvalishvili marks a massive turnaround for the 32-year-old former champion. After losing the title via a controversial disqualification against Aljamain Sterling in 2021, Yan entered a challenging stretch, going 2-3 in his next five fights, including a split decision loss to Sean O'Malley and a prior unanimous decision defeat to Dvalishvili.

However, Yan has now put together an impressive run of wins to reclaim the title:

  • March 2024: Defeated Song Yadong via unanimous decision at UFC 299.

  • November 2024: Swept former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo via unanimous decision in a dominant performance.

  • July 2025: Secured a tough unanimous decision victory over rising prospect Marcus McGhee in a high-risk contest.

  • December 2025 (UFC 323): Dominated Merab Dvalishvili to recapture the undisputed Bantamweight Championship.

This championship win is more than just revenge; it is a declaration that the "No Mercy" era is far from over.

What's Next for the Champion?

With his record now standing at 20 wins and 5 losses, Petr Yan is back on top of the most talent-stacked division in the UFC. His victory ended Dvalishvili's impressive 14-fight win streak, re-establishing Yan as the benchmark at 135 pounds.

The Bantamweight division is a shark tank, and the new champion will not lack challengers. Whether it's a rubber match with Dvalishvili, a title unification with the interim champion (if one is crowned), or a fresh face like Umar Nurmagomedov, the road ahead is full of high-stakes matchups. For now, however, the Russian cyclone can enjoy his place back atop the mountain
